What goes in. What doesn't. Where the no-gos go instead.

A short, clear list. If you have something that's not obvious from this page, just ask. We'd rather answer the call than have you find out at pickup.

04 · The KC alternatives

Where the no-gos go.

Kansas City has decent infrastructure for the things we can't haul. The Household Hazardous Waste facility at 4707 Deramus accepts paint, batteries, chemicals, and lots more — free for residents, by appointment.

Most auto parts stores will take car batteries off your hands free of charge — same for old motor oil. AC units need a certified HVAC tech to recover the freon before they can go anywhere.

If you've got something on the no-go list mixed into a big load, call us first. We can usually flag it for separate handling rather than refusing the whole dumpster.

Questions

Common follow-ups.

Can I mix yard waste with construction debris? +
Better not to. Yard waste-only loads can be composted; mixed loads have to go to landfill. If you've got both, ask about doing two loads — sometimes we can split disposal.
What happens if I load something forbidden? +
Worst case, we have to leave the dumpster on your property and you have to remove the item before we can haul. Most disposal facilities reject loads with hazardous materials.
What about TVs and computers? +
Old CRTs no — they have lead. Flat-screen TVs, computer towers, and most electronics are fine in small amounts. KC has e-waste drop-off events too.
